These signs represent the most common symptoms, but others such as sudden confusion, trouble seeing, or loss of balance may also occur. High vigilance and swift action are essential in minimizing brain damage and optimizing patient outcomes.
Upon suspecting a stroke, immediate activation of the stroke pathway is crucial. This includes rapid neurologic assessment, blood glucose testing, and urgent neuroimaging. Intravenous thrombolysis with alteplase should be considered if within the 4.5-hour window from symptom onset and without contraindications.
Patients with confirmed stroke should be transferred to a dedicated stroke unit. Management focuses on secondary prevention measures, including antiplatelet therapy, blood pressure control, and statin therapy. Comprehensive rehabilitation programs are also integral to maximizing recovery and reducing disability.
Education is key in stroke management. Healthcare professionals should be trained to recognize early signs of stroke and understand the urgency of initiating the stroke pathway.
