Introduction
As healthcare professionals, we often encounter patients with neurodegenerative disorders, among which Parkinson's disease (PD) is prevalent.
Pathophysiology
PD is a chronic, progressive disorder, primarily affecting the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the brain. The resultant dopamine deficiency leads to motor symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia.
Clinical Presentation
Patients typically present with asymmetric resting tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity. Non-motor symptoms like depression, cognitive impairment, and autonomic dysfunction may also be present.
Management
Treatment aims to control symptoms and improve quality of life. Pharmacotherapy, including levodopa and dopamine agonists, is the mainstay. Deep brain stimulation may be considered in advanced cases.
