Immunotherapy has revolutionized the field of oncology, offering new hope for patients with various types of cancer. This treatment modality harnesses the body's immune system to fight cancer cells, presenting a significant shift from traditional therapies. Immunotherapy, also known as biological therapy, uses substances to stimulate or suppress the immune system to help the body fight cancer, infection, and other diseases. Some types of immunotherapy only target certain cells, while others can affect the immune system in a general way. Examples include checkpoint inhibitors, cancer vaccines, and adoptive cell transfer.
Immunotherapy has been approved for use in a variety of cancers including lung, melanoma, head and neck, bladder, and renal cell carcinoma among others. Its use is also being explored in hematologic malignancies. The choice of immunotherapy is based on the type of cancer, its genetic makeup, and the patient's overall health.
Immunotherapies can cause side effects, which differ from those of traditional chemotherapy. These may include inflammation in the lungs, colon, liver, endocrine glands, and skin. Management of these side effects often involves corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive agents and sometimes requires discontinuation of therapy.

Immunotherapy represents a paradigm shift in cancer treatment, with the potential to improve survival and quality of life for patients. Physicians must stay abreast of these advancements to provide the best possible care for their patients.
