Stroke, a leading cause of disability, necessitates prompt recognition and management to mitigate adverse outcomes.
FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, Time to call emergency services) remains a key tool for early detection. However, healthcare professionals should also be vigilant for less obvious signs such as sudden confusion, trouble seeing, or severe headache.
Once a stroke is suspected, rapid initiation of thrombolytic therapy is vital. Intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) remains the gold standard, provided it is administered within 4.5 hours of symptom onset.
Post-stroke, attention must shift towards secondary prevention. This includes risk factor modification, antithrombotic therapy, and potentially carotid endarterectomy for patients with significant carotid stenosis.
Given the severe implications of stroke, healthcare professionals must be adept at recognizing early signs and initiating prompt management. Continuous education and practice are crucial to improve patient outcomes.
