Risk assessment in CVD involves evaluating a patient's likelihood of developing cardiovascular complications. It incorporates factors such as family history, lifestyle, and comorbid conditions. The Framingham Heart Study risk score and the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk calculator are two widely used tools for this purpose.
Implementation of risk assessment strategies begins with a thorough patient evaluation. The initial step is the collection of a detailed medical history, followed by a physical examination and appropriate diagnostic tests. The data gathered is then used to compute the risk score. Despite existing challenges, continuous advancements in this field are expected to enhance CVD management and improve patient outcomes.
