Dacrocystorhinostomy, or DCR, is a surgical procedure performed to open the tear drainage system in the nose and sinuses. For example, endoscopic DCR (EDCR) is a newer technique that involves inserting a tiny camera into the nose and sinuses. This allows the surgeon to visualize the entire area, making it easier to identify the exact location of the tear sac and create the new drainage pathway. In addition, image-guided DCR (IGDCR) is another cutting-edge technology that uses 3D imaging to map out the tear sac and surrounding anatomy. This allows the surgeon to create a more precise opening for the tear sac, reducing the risk of complications and improving the overall outcome of the procedure.
Although DCR is generally safe, there are still risks associated with the procedure. These include infection, bleeding, scarring, and the potential for the tear sac to close up again. Additionally, there is a risk of damage to the surrounding tissue, which can lead to complications such as pain and numbness.
