Introduction

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Its prevalence is increasing with the aging population, making an in-depth understanding of this disease crucial for providing effective patient care.

Etiology and Pathophysiology

PD is characterized by the accumulation of Lewy bodies, composed of alpha-synuclein, in the brain. Genetic and environmental factors contribute to its etiology. Genetic factors include mutations in genes such as SNCA, LRRK2, and PRKN. Environmental factors encompass exposure to pesticides and heavy metals. The loss of dopaminergic neurons leads to motor and non-motor symptoms.

Clinical Presentation

PD typically presents with motor symptoms like bradykinesia, resting tremor, rigidity, and postural instability. Non-motor symptoms including cognitive impairment, depression, sleep disorders, and autonomic dysfunction are often under-recognized but significantly impact patients' quality of life.

Diagnosis and Management

PD diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on history and physical examination. Neuroimaging can assist but is not routinely required. Treatment involves pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Levodopa remains the most effective drug, while deep brain stimulation offers an alternative for patients with drug-refractory symptoms.

Role of Healthcare Professionals

Healthcare professionals play a critical role in diagnosing PD early, managing its symptoms, and improving the patient's quality of life. Regular monitoring, medication adjustments, and addressing non-motor symptoms are key aspects of care. Multidisciplinary care involving neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and psychologists is beneficial.

Conclusion

Enhancing our understanding of Parkinson's disease is essential for its effective management. As healthcare professionals, we must stay abreast of the latest research, understand the complexities of this disease, and strive to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care that improves the quality of life for individuals living with PD.
