Lipid profile testing is the primary diagnostic tool for dyslipidemia. It measures total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, and triglycerides. The interpretation of these values should be in the context of the patient's overall cardiovascular risk.
Treatment strategies for dyslipidemia focus on lifestyle modifications and pharmacotherapy. Lifestyle changes include dietary modifications, increased physical activity, and smoking cessation. Pharmacotherapy often involves statins, but other medication classes like bile acid sequestrants, cholesterol absorption inhibitors, and PCSK9 inhibitors may be used.
Healthcare professionals play a pivotal role in patient education about dyslipidemia. Understanding the disease, its risks, and the importance of adherence to treatment can significantly improve patient outcomes.
