Cardiovascular risk assessment in diabetic patients is multi-faceted, involving a thorough evaluation of traditional risk factors, such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, and smoking, along with diabetes-specific factors like duration of diabetes, presence of microvascular complications, and glycemic control. Tools like the UKPDS risk engine, which incorporates these factors, can aid in quantifying cardiovascular risk.
Effective management of cardiovascular risk in diabetic patients involves both lifestyle modifications and pharmacological interventions. Lifestyle modifications include dietary changes, regular physical activity, smoking cessation, and weight management. Pharmacological interventions include glucose-lowering agents, antihypertensives, lipid-lowering drugs, and antiplatelet therapy.
Recent trials have demonstrated cardiovascular benefits with certain glucose-lowering agents.
