Adult vaccination has undergone significant advancements in recent years, introducing novel vaccines and updated guidelines. This article aims to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive update on these developments to ensure optimal patient care.
The landscape of adult immunization has been enriched by the introduction of new vaccines. For instance, the adjuvanted herpes zoster subunit vaccine (HZ/su) has demonstrated superior efficacy and safety in preventing herpes zoster in adults. Similarly, the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) has improved protection against pneumococcal diseases.
Guidelines for adult vaccination have also been revised to reflect current evidence. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) now recommends a single dose of PCV13 for adults aged 65 and above, followed by the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). The ACIP also recommends routine use of HZ/su for adults aged 50 and above.
The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated the rapid development and deployment of vaccines. Multiple vaccines have been authorized for emergency use, with mRNA vaccines showing high efficacy and safety. Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in promoting vaccine acceptance and addressing vaccine hesitancy among patients.
The field of adult vaccination is evolving rapidly, with the introduction of novel vaccines and updated guidelines. Healthcare professionals need to stay abreast of these advances to provide optimal patient care. The COVID-19 pandemic has further underscored the importance of vaccination in protecting public health.
