Calcium is the primary component of bones and teeth, accounting for about 99% of the body's total calcium. It plays a crucial role in bone formation, maintenance, and remodeling - a continuous process where old bone is replaced by new bone tissue. Adequate calcium intake is essential for optimal bone health, especially during childhood and adolescence when peak bone mass is achieved, and in older adults to prevent bone loss and osteoporosis.
The body tightly controls calcium homeostasis to maintain constant blood calcium levels. This regulation involves the interplay of hormones like parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, and calcitonin. PTH and vitamin D increase blood calcium levels by enhancing bone resorption, intestinal calcium absorption, and renal calcium reabsorption. On the other hand, calcitonin reduces blood calcium levels by inhibiting bone resorption.
Understanding calcium's role in bone metabolism is crucial for healthcare professionals. It helps in the diagnosis and management of bone-related disorders like osteoporosis, rickets, and hyperparathyroidism. Moreover, it underscores the importance of adequate dietary calcium intake and vitamin D status in promoting bone health and preventing bone diseases. Healthcare professionals should educate patients about these aspects, especially those at high risk for bone disorders.
