Sleep Apnea, a prevalent and potentially serious disorder, is characterized by repeated stops and starts in breathing during sleep. It poses significant challenges for healthcare professionals due to its complex nature and potential severe consequences if left untreated. Understanding the pathophysiology of sleep apnea is crucial for its management. In Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), the most common type, the airway becomes blocked, leading to intermittent airflow. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), on the other hand, involves the brain failing to signal the muscles to breathe. Comprehension of these mechanisms can guide targeted treatment plans.
Accurate diagnosis is the cornerstone of effective management. Polysomnography remains the gold standard diagnostic tool. However, home-based sleep tests have become increasingly popular due to their convenience and cost-effectiveness. These tests must be interpreted carefully to avoid misdiagnosis.
The first line of treatment for OSA is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. It maintains open airways and ensures continuous breathing. However, patient compliance can be an issue.
