Acute and preventive pharmacotherapy remains a cornerstone in migraine management. Acute treatments aim to alleviate symptoms during an attack, employing triptans, NSAIDs, or anti-emetics. Preventive treatments, such as beta-blockers, anticonvulsants, or CGRP inhibitors, are used to reduce attack frequency and severity. Tailoring these interventions to individual patient profiles is crucial for optimizing outcomes.
Non-pharmacological strategies, including lifestyle modifications and behavioral therapies, play an integral role in comprehensive migraine management. Regular physical activity, balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management can significantly reduce the frequency and intensity of attacks. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and biofeedback have also shown promise in managing migraines.
Emerging therapies like neuromodulation devices offer new avenues for migraine management. Transcutaneous supraorbital nerve stimulation (tSNS) and non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) have shown efficacy in both acute treatment and prevention. As healthcare professionals, staying abreast of the latest research and advances in this field is essential to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
