The misuse and overuse of antibiotics have led to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, posing a significant public health threat. As physicians, we play a crucial role in curbing this trend through the rational use of antibiotics.
Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria evolve in response to the use of these medicines. Bacteria, not humans or animals, become antibiotic-resistant. These bacteria may infect humans and animals, and the infections they cause are harder to treat than those caused by non-resistant bacteria.
Rational antibiotic use involves prescribing the right antibiotic, at the right dose, at the right time, and for the right duration. It is essential to only prescribe antibiotics when necessary, and to educate patients on the importance of taking the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if they feel better before it is finished.
Diagnostic tests can help determine whether a patient's symptoms are due to a bacterial infection, which can be treated with antibiotics, or a viral infection, which cannot. Rapid diagnostic tests can provide results in about 15-20 minutes.
Antibiotic stewardship programs aim to optimize antibiotic use in order to improve patient outcomes, reduce antibiotic resistance, and decrease unnecessary costs. These programs involve coordinated interventions designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antibiotic agents.
As physicians, our role in promoting patient health extends beyond individual patient encounters. Through the rational use of antibiotics, we can contribute to the broader public health goal of combating antibiotic resistance. By adhering to the principles of rational antibiotic use, using diagnostic tests appropriately, and participating in antibiotic stewardship programs, we can ensure our patients receive the best possible care while also protecting the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations.
