GeneXpert MTB/RIF

Introduced in 2010, the GeneXpert MTB/RIF system has transformed TB diagnosis by providing rapid and accurate detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance. This automated nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) employs real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify and detect targeted genetic sequences, significantly reducing the time to diagnosis from weeks to mere hours.

Line Probe Assays

Line Probe Assays (LPAs) are another form of NAATs that have shown promise in TB detection. LPAs allow for simultaneous detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and resistance to first-line anti-TB drugs. Their high sensitivity and specificity, combined with a quicker turnaround time than conventional culture methods, make them a valuable tool in the fight against TB.

Digital Radiography

As an adjunct to molecular tests, digital radiography has emerged as a non-invasive and cost-effective tool for TB detection. Advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning have further enhanced its diagnostic capabilities, allowing for automated interpretation of chest radiographs with high accuracy.

Whole Genome Sequencing

Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) represents the cutting edge of TB diagnostic technology. By sequencing the entire genome of the TB bacterium, WGS provides comprehensive information about drug resistance, virulence, and transmission patterns. Although currently limited by cost and technical complexity, WGS holds immense potential for future TB control strategies.
