Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a complex, progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure in the lungs. Recognizing the disease early and understanding its pathophysiology are key to optimal patient management. This article provides a comprehensive overview of PH for healthcare professionals.
PH occurs when the small arteries in the lungs become narrowed or blocked, causing resistance to blood flow. This results in increased pressure within these vessels, and the heart must work harder to pump blood through them, leading to weakening and potential failure of the right heart ventricle over time.
The World Health Organization categorizes PH into five groups based on cause, clinical presentation, and treatment strategy. Diagnosis involves a series of tests including echocardiograms, right heart catheterization, and pulmonary function tests. Early detection is crucial for effective management of the condition.
Treatment aims to control symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Therapies may include medications such as vasodilators, anticoagulants, and diuretics. In severe cases, lung transplantation may be considered. It is also essential to address underlying conditions that may contribute to PH.
Healthcare professionals play a pivotal role in managing PH. This includes early detection, accurate diagnosis, initiating appropriate treatment, and monitoring disease progression. Patient education about lifestyle modifications and medication adherence is also a key component of care.

Early recognition, accurate diagnosis, and effective management strategies can significantly improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
