Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) pose significant public health challenges in India, accounting for more than 10% of the country's disease burden. The widespread occurrence of these diseases is largely attributed to environmental factors and socio-economic disparities.
Malaria, dengue, and chikungunya are the most prevalent VBDs in India. Malaria alone accounts for 89% of the South-East Asia Region's burden. Dengue, with its explosive outbreaks, is now endemic in all states. Meanwhile, chikungunya, although less prevalent, has seen an increase in cases over the past decade.
Management of VBDs in India faces numerous challenges. These include inadequate surveillance, lack of public awareness, and limited resources for vector control. Additionally, climate change and urbanization exacerbate the spread of vectors, making control measures more difficult.
Integrated Vector Management (IVM) is advocated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the control of VBDs. This approach combines methods to control vector populations and reduce disease transmission. It emphasizes sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and ecological soundness. In India, enhancing surveillance systems, improving diagnostic facilities, and strengthening health infrastructure are vital components of IVM.
Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in managing VBDs. Their responsibilities range from early detection and treatment to educating the public about prevention methods. Furthermore, their involvement in research can contribute to the development of new strategies for VBD control.
The burden of VBDs in India is significant, but with concerted efforts from healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the community, it can be effectively managed. By adopting comprehensive strategies such as IVM and strengthening healthcare infrastructure, India can make substantial progress in controlling VBDs.
