Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) pose a significant public health challenge in India due to its tropical climate and high population density. This review aims to enlighten healthcare professionals about the prevalence and management of these diseases.
India is a hotspot for various VBDs such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and Japanese encephalitis. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India accounted for about 4% of global malaria cases in 2019. Dengue has seen an alarming increase with over 100,000 cases reported annually. Chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis also demonstrate significant prevalence, particularly in rural areas.
India has implemented numerous control measures to combat VBDs. The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) is the primary agency responsible for prevention and control of these diseases. Strategies include vector control, disease surveillance, early diagnosis and treatment, and health education. Despite these efforts, challenges such as urbanization, climate change, and insecticide resistance hinder progress.
Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in managing VBDs. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality. Professionals should also engage in community education to promote preventive measures such as the use of insecticide-treated nets and personal protective measures. Moreover, reporting of cases to surveillance systems is vital for tracking disease trends and evaluating control measures.
Vector-borne diseases continue to pose a significant health burden in India. Despite the challenges, concerted efforts from healthcare professionals, government agencies, and communities can result in substantial progress towards disease control. Continued research, surveillance, and education are crucial in this ongoing battle against VBDs.
