The field of adult vaccination has seen significant advancements in recent years, driven by the development of new vaccines and updates in immunization recommendations. This article aims to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive guide to these recent changes.
Recent years have seen the development and approval of several new vaccines for adults. For instance, the adjuvanted herpes zoster subunit vaccine (Shingrix) has been shown to be over 90% effective at preventing shingles and postherpetic neuralgia. Similarly, the advent of mRNA technology has led to the development of highly effective COVID-19 vaccines, such as those by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.
Immunization guidelines have also been updated to reflect the availability of these new vaccines. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) now recommends Shingrix for adults aged 50 and older, and COVID-19 vaccines for all adults. Furthermore, ACIP has updated its recommendations for pneumococcal vaccination, advising that all adults aged 65 and older receive both PCV13 and PPSV23.
Despite these advances, vaccine hesitancy remains a significant challenge. Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in addressing this issue by providing accurate information about vaccines and addressing patients' concerns. The use of motivational interviewing techniques can be particularly effective in this regard.
In conclusion, recent advances in adult vaccination offer new opportunities for preventing infectious diseases in adults. However, it is essential that healthcare professionals stay updated on these changes to provide the best possible care to their patients. Furthermore, they must take active steps to address vaccine hesitancy, ensuring that these advances translate into improved population health.
