Targeted therapies function by interfering with specific proteins or enzymes that contribute to cancer growth and progression. These therapies can be categorized into two main types: small molecule drugs that penetrate the cell membrane to interact with targets inside the cell, and large molecule drugs or monoclonal antibodies that attach to targets on the cell surface.

For instance, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, such as imatinib and gefitinib, have revolutionized the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia and non-small cell lung cancer, respectively. The impact of targeted therapy in oncology is profound. It has not only improved survival rates, but also enhanced the quality of life for cancer patients by minimizing treatment-related side effects. Moreover, targeted therapies can be used in combination with traditional treatments to increase their effectiveness.
Despite these promising advances, challenges persist. The development of resistance to targeted therapy is a significant hurdle. Furthermore, the high cost of these therapies can limit their accessibility. Future research should focus on overcoming these challenges and exploring novel targets for therapy.
In conclusion, targeted therapy represents a significant shift in the oncology landscape, offering a more personalized approach to cancer treatment. While challenges remain, the progress made thus far underscores the potential of this treatment modality to revolutionize cancer care.
