Several new lipid-lowering drugs have been introduced, including proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors, which are monoclonal antibodies that lower LDL cholesterol levels by increasing the number of LDL receptors on the liver surface, and bempedoic acid, an ATP citrate lyase inhibitor that reduces cholesterol biosynthesis. Both drugs have shown promising results in clinical trials, with significant reductions in LDL-C levels and cardiovascular events.
Genetic studies have provided new insights into the role of lipids in cardiovascular disease. Variants in genes involved in triglyceride metabolism, such as APOC3 and ANGPTL4, have been associated with lower triglyceride levels and a reduced risk of coronary heart disease. These findings have led to the development of new therapeutic targets and the use of gene-editing technologies for lipid management.
Personalized medicine is becoming increasingly important in lipid management, with the recognition that lipid levels and responses to therapy can vary greatly between individuals. This has led to the development of risk prediction algorithms that incorporate genetic, clinical, and lifestyle factors to guide treatment decisions.
