Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) are a significant public health concern in India, contributing to substantial morbidity and mortality. This article provides a comprehensive review of the prevalence and management of VBDs in India, focusing on diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya.
India, with its diverse ecosystems, is a hotspot for VBDs. Malaria remains the most prevalent, with an estimated 5.6 million cases in 2017. Dengue, with an increasing trend, reported approximately 188,401 cases in 2017. Chikungunya, although less prevalent, showed a significant rise with approximately 60,777 cases in the same year.
The management of VBDs in India faces several challenges. Inadequate surveillance systems, lack of public awareness, and limited resources for vector control are among the prominent issues. Furthermore, climate change and urbanization contribute to the increased risk and spread of these diseases.
India's approach to managing VBDs involves integrated vector management (IVM). This includes measures like insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying (IRS), and larviciding. Additionally, early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial. Public health education is also emphasized to raise awareness and encourage preventive measures.
Vector-borne diseases continue to pose significant health challenges in India. Understanding their prevalence and effective management strategies is crucial for healthcare professionals. By adopting a multi-pronged approach involving vector control, early diagnosis, treatment, and public education, it is possible to reduce the burden of these diseases significantly.
