Tuberculosis (TB), an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, continues to be a global health concern. Early detection and prompt treatment are essential in controlling the spread of the disease. This article provides an overview of the current advancements and innovations in TB detection.
The GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay, endorsed by the World Health Organization, is a rapid molecular test that detects TB and rifampicin resistance. It offers a significant improvement over conventional smear microscopy, with higher sensitivity and specificity, and results available within two hours.
LAMP is a simple, rapid, and cost-effective molecular diagnostic tool. It amplifies the DNA of Mycobacterium tuberculosis at a constant temperature, providing results within an hour. LAMP’s high sensitivity and specificity make it a promising tool for TB detection, especially in resource-limited settings.
IGRAs are blood tests that measure the immune response to TB proteins. They are more specific than the traditional tuberculin skin test and can distinguish between latent TB infection and active disease. However, they cannot determine if the disease is drug-resistant.
Advancements in imaging techniques, such as high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), have improved the detection of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary TB. These techniques provide detailed images of the disease’s extent and can guide biopsy procedures.
The advancements and innovations in TB detection are promising, offering more rapid and accurate diagnosis. However, challenges remain, such as the need for point-of-care tests, the detection of drug-resistant strains, and the differentiation between latent and active TB. Continued research and development in this field are essential for the global control of TB.
