Glimepiride is an oral medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs known as sulfonylureas. Glimepiride helps control blood sugar levels by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas.
The usual starting dose of glimepiride is 1 mg or 2 mg once daily. The dose is usually increased gradually until blood sugar levels are controlled. Most people require 2 mg to 8 mg of glimepiride per day.
Glimepiride may be used in combination with other diabetes medications, such as metformin or insulin, to achieve better blood sugar control.
Glimepiride works by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that helps to control blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels are high, Glimepiride helps to lower them by stimulating the release of insulin.
