In conjunction with phosphate, it forms hydroxyapatite crystals, providing rigidity and strength to the skeletal structure. The deficiency of calcium can lead to decreased bone mineral density, resulting in osteoporosis.
Bone resorption is the process by which osteoclasts break down bone tissue and release the minerals, including calcium, into the bloodstream. This process is crucial for maintaining calcium homeostasis in the body. Imbalances in this process can lead to pathological conditions such as osteoporosis and hypercalcemia.
Calcium metabolism is tightly regulated by hormones such as parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonin, and vitamin D. PTH and vitamin D increase blood calcium levels by promoting bone resorption and enhancing calcium absorption in the gut. On the other hand, calcitonin reduces blood calcium levels by inhibiting bone resorption.
Calcium supplementation is often recommended for individuals at risk of osteoporosis, particularly postmenopausal women and the elderly. However, the benefits of supplementation should be weighed against potential risks, such as hypercalcemia and kidney stones. Dietary sources of calcium are generally preferred over supplements.

This knowledge aids in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of skeletal disorders, ensuring optimal patient care.
