Laboratory investigations play a pivotal role in diagnosing anemia. Complete blood count (CBC) and reticulocyte count are initial tests that provide information about the size and number of red blood cells. Further tests such as serum iron studies, vitamin B12, folate levels, and bone marrow examination may be required based on initial findings.
Anemia is broadly classified into microcytic, normocytic, and macrocytic based on the mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Microcytic anemia can indicate iron deficiency or thalassemia, while macrocytic anemia may suggest vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. Normocytic anemia can be due to chronic disease, hemolysis, or bone marrow failure.
The treatment of anemia is primarily directed towards the underlying cause. Iron supplementation is the mainstay of treatment for iron deficiency anemia, while vitamin B12 or folate supplementation is used for macrocytic anemia. In severe cases, blood transfusion or erythropoiesis-stimulating agents may be required.
