Calcium, a vital nutrient, plays a pivotal role in numerous physiological processes. It is integral to bone health, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and blood coagulation. Around 99% of the body's calcium is stored in the skeleton, with the remaining 1% circulating in the blood and intracellular fluids.
Bone metabolism is a dynamic, ongoing process involving bone formation (osteoblast activity) and bone resorption (osteoclast activity). The balance between these processes determines overall bone health. Calcium homeostasis is maintained through the actions of hormones such as parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, and calcitonin.
Calcium balance is tightly linked to bone metabolism. When serum calcium levels drop, PTH is secreted, stimulating osteoclasts to resorb bone and release calcium. Conversely, high serum calcium levels inhibit PTH release, reducing bone resorption. Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption in the gut, while calcitonin inhibits osteoclast activity, lowering blood calcium levels.
Disruptions in calcium and bone metabolism can lead to conditions like osteoporosis, rickets, and hyperparathyroidism. Understanding this interplay allows for effective prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies. For instance, calcium and vitamin D supplementation can prevent and treat osteoporosis, while parathyroidectomy is a treatment option for hyperparathyroidism.

A deep understanding of these processes is essential for healthcare professionals to effectively manage related conditions.
