Endocrine disorders disrupt this balance, resulting in significant clinical and psychosocial consequences, including diminished life satisfaction. This review synthesizes recent evidence on the interplay between hormonal imbalances and life satisfaction in patients with endocrine disorders, covering prevalence, underlying mechanisms, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic strategies, evidence-based management, emerging therapies, and practice guidelines, with a focus on practical and clinically relevant implications for healthcare professionals.
The endocrine system orchestrates critical physiological processes through precise hormonal regulation. Disruptions in hormonal balance, whether due to intrinsic glandular pathology or systemic disease, can profoundly affect both physical health and psychological well-being. Accumulating research demonstrates the bidirectional relationship between endocrine disorders and life satisfaction, with hormonal imbalances contributing to mood changes, cognitive impairment, and overall quality of life decrements. Understanding these associations is crucial for clinicians to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care to those affected by endocrine dysfunction.
Endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus, thyroid dysfunction, adrenal disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and hypogonadism are prevalent globally, affecting millions. The prevalence of thyroid disorders, for example, ranges from 5% to 10% in various populations, while diabetes affects over 500 million individuals worldwide. Epidemiological data consistently reveal that these disorders are associated with increased rates of depression, anxiety, and reduced life satisfaction. Multidisciplinary collaboration between endocrinologists, psychiatrists, and primary care providers enhances diagnostic accuracy and holistic care.
Restoring hormonal balance remains the cornerstone of endocrine disorder management. This may involve hormone replacement therapy (e.g., levothyroxine for hypothyroidism, insulin for diabetes), pharmacological modulation (e.g., metformin for PCOS), surgical intervention (e.g., adrenalectomy), or lifestyle modification (diet, exercise). Addressing comorbid mental health symptoms through counseling, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or psychotropic medications is critical for optimizing life satisfaction. Patient education, medication adherence, and regular monitoring are essential to achieving long-term disease control and improving quality of life.
Recent advances include the development of selective hormonal receptor modulators, long-acting insulin analogues, SGLT2 inhibitors, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and anti-androgen therapies for PCOS, all of which show promise in improving both metabolic and psychosocial outcomes. Routine assessment of psychosocial health, shared decision-making, individualized treatment plans, and regular follow-up are strongly recommended. Guidelines underscore the importance of integrating mental health care into standard endocrine practice to address the full spectrum of patient needs, ultimately enhancing life satisfaction and long-term outcomes.

Endocrine disorders, through complex pathophysiological mechanisms, significantly impair life satisfaction, necessitating a holistic, evidence-based approach to diagnosis and management. Ongoing advances in therapeutic options and guideline-based care offer opportunities to improve quality of life for affected individuals. Vigilance in recognizing neuropsychiatric symptoms, proactive risk factor modification, and interdisciplinary collaboration are key to optimizing outcomes in patients with endocrine disorders.
