This review examines the clinical utility, epidemiological context, pathophysiological implications, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnostic strategies, therapeutic approaches, emerging digital interventions, and current guideline recommendations for integrating smart bladder diaries into urologic practice.
Lower urinary tract symptoms affect millions worldwide, imposing considerable quality-of-life and economic burdens. Traditional paper-based bladder diaries, while valuable, are limited by patient recall bias and incomplete data. The advent of digital health solutions, such as smart bladder diaries and integrated urologic care apps, is transforming the patient-provider paradigm by enabling continuous data capture, remote monitoring, and tailored clinical interventions. This article provides a comprehensive, evidence-based review of smart bladder diaries in modern urologic practice, targeting the needs of healthcare professionals seeking to optimize LUTS care with digital tools.
LUTS prevalence increases with age, affecting approximately 20-30% of adults over 40 globally, with higher rates in the elderly and those with comorbidities. LUTS encompasses storage, voiding, and post-micturition symptoms, significantly impacting daily functioning, mental health, and healthcare resource utilization. Notably, the economic burden is substantial, with direct and indirect costs arising from diagnostic procedures, pharmacotherapy, hospitalizations, and lost productivity.
