In recent years, the field of adult vaccination has undergone significant advances, introducing novel vaccines and updating guidelines for existing ones. As healthcare professionals, staying abreast of these developments is crucial for patient care.
There has been noteworthy progress in the development of new vaccines. One example is the Herpes Zoster Subunit (HZ/su) vaccine, approved by the FDA in 2017 for adults aged 50 and above. It offers over 90% efficacy against shingles and postherpetic neuralgia, surpassing the previously used Zostavax vaccine.
Guidelines for existing vaccines have also been revised. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) now recommends a single dose of Tdap vaccine for all adults who have not previously received it, followed by a Td booster every 10 years. Moreover, the pneumococcal vaccine sequence has been updated with the PCV13 vaccine no longer routinely recommended for all adults aged 65 and older.
Updated vaccine schedules have been released to accommodate these changes. For instance, the HZ/su vaccine requires two doses, administered 2-6 months apart. Furthermore, the HPV vaccine series can now be started in adults up to age 45, an increase from the previous age limit of 26.
With new vaccines and guidelines, safety and efficacy continue to be paramount. All vaccines undergo rigorous testing before approval, and post-marketing surveillance ensures ongoing safety. The high efficacy of new vaccines like HZ/su demonstrates the success of these processes.
Keeping up-to-date with advances in adult vaccination is essential for healthcare professionals. The introduction of novel vaccines and updates to existing guidelines and schedules ensures improved patient outcomes. Continued vigilance in monitoring vaccine safety and efficacy remains a critical aspect of this evolving field.
