Healthcare services are designed to promote health, prevent illness and treat disease. However, these settings may inadvertently become a source of infection, leading to unintended adverse health outcomes. Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) represent a significant and often overlooked threat in modern healthcare.
HAIs are infections that patients acquire while receiving treatment for other conditions within a healthcare setting. They are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with millions of patients affected each year. These infections not only compromise patient safety but also incur substantial costs related to prolonged hospital stays, additional diagnostic tests, and treatment.
The most common types of HAIs include: central line-associated bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, surgical site infections, and ventilator-associated pneumonia. These infections are often caused by multi-drug resistant organisms, which further complicates their management and control.
Preventing HAIs requires a comprehensive approach that includes infection control practices, antimicrobial stewardship, and healthcare worker education. Infection control practices such as hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, and environmental cleaning are crucial. Antimicrobial stewardship programs aim to optimize the use of antimicrobials to reduce resistance. Lastly, ongoing education and training of healthcare workers can ensure adherence to these measures.
HAIs remain a significant challenge in modern healthcare, necessitating a multifaceted approach to effectively combat this silent threat. By recognizing the burden of HAIs and implementing rigorous prevention and control measures, healthcare institutions can significantly reduce the incidence of these infections, thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.
