Calcium: Essential for Bone Health

Calcium serves as the primary mineral in the skeletal system, accounting for about 99% of the body's total calcium content. It is critical for the formation and maintenance of bones and teeth. Moreover, calcium is required for bone remodeling, a process that involves the continuous breakdown and rebuilding of bone tissue, ensuring bone strength and integrity.

Calcium Homeostasis and Bone Metabolism

Calcium homeostasis is a tightly regulated process that maintains calcium levels in the blood. The parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin play pivotal roles in this process. When blood calcium levels drop, PTH is secreted, which increases calcium absorption in the intestines, calcium reabsorption in the kidneys, and calcium release from bones.
