Over the past few years, several new AEDs have been introduced, including Brivaracetam, Perampanel, and Lacosamide, each having a unique mechanism of action. These drugs have shown improved efficacy and tolerability, and are now considered first-line treatments for specific epilepsy syndromes.
Neuromodulation techniques such as Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), and Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS) have emerged as promising therapeutic options. These techniques modulate neuronal activity, reducing seizure frequency and severity in drug-resistant epilepsy.
Genetic testing has become an integral part of epilepsy management, especially for early-onset and familial cases. Identification of genetic mutations can guide therapy choices, predict prognosis, and provide opportunities for personalized medicine.
