Fatigue is a subjective feeling of tiredness, lack of energy, or exhaustion. It can be acute or chronic, with the latter persisting for more than six months. Chronic fatigue can be debilitating, affecting patients' quality of life and productivity. It can be a symptom of physiological conditions, psychological disorders, or a combination of both.
Physiological causes of fatigue include systemic illnesses such as anemia, diabetes, hypothyroidism, and chronic infections. It can also be a symptom of cardiovascular, pulmonary, or renal diseases. Fatigue is often a side effect of medications, including antihypertensives, antidepressants, and antihistamines.
Fatigue can be a manifestation of psychological conditions such as depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders. Chronic fatigue syndrome, a complex disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that cannot be explained by any underlying medical condition, is thought to have a significant psychological component.
Management of fatigue requires a comprehensive approach. It's crucial to conduct a thorough medical history and physical examination, and if necessary, appropriate diagnostic tests. Treatment should be tailored to the underlying cause. In the absence of an identifiable medical condition, management may involve lifestyle modifications, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and stress management techniques.
Understanding the multifaceted nature of fatigue is crucial for effective management. Healthcare professionals must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to accurately diagnose and treat fatigue. As we continue to decode fatigue, it is hoped that we can improve the quality of life for patients who suffer from this complex symptom.
