Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) represent a significant public health concern in India, with a substantial impact on morbidity and mortality rates. This review aims to provide healthcare professionals with an understanding of the prevalence and impact of these diseases.
India, with its diverse ecological conditions, has a high prevalence of VBDs. Malaria, dengue, and chikungunya are the most commonly reported. Malaria alone accounts for 89% of the South-East Asia region's cases, with India bearing the brunt. Dengue, with its rapid urban spread, has seen a 200% increase in the last decade.
VBDs have a profound impact on India's health and economic stability. They strain the healthcare system, cause work loss, and often lead to high out-of-pocket expenses for families. The World Bank estimates that malaria's economic burden in India is approximately $1.94 billion annually.
Efforts to control VBDs in India face numerous challenges. These include inadequate surveillance, lack of public awareness, and climate change, which can expand vector habitats. Moreover, the rapid urbanization and population growth exacerbate these problems.
Healthcare professionals play a critical role in managing VBDs. Their responsibilities range from early diagnosis and treatment to patient education and community outreach. They are also integral to research efforts aimed at developing more effective prevention and control strategies.
In conclusion, VBDs pose a significant threat to India's public health. Understanding their prevalence and impact is crucial for healthcare professionals, as they are on the front lines of detection, management, and prevention. Continued research, surveillance, and education are vital to mitigate the burden of these diseases.
