Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) represent a significant public health concern in India, contributing to substantial morbidity and mortality. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the prevalence and impact of VBDs in India for healthcare professionals.
India's diverse ecology contributes to the prevalence of various VBDs, including Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, and Japanese Encephalitis. Malaria, predominantly caused by Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, remains a significant health issue, with an estimated 5.6 million cases reported in 2019. Dengue, another critical VBD, has seen an exponential rise, with an estimated 100,000 cases annually. Chikungunya and Japanese Encephalitis also persist as endemic diseases in several regions.
VBDs impose a substantial health burden, causing significant morbidity and mortality. They also strain the healthcare system and hinder socioeconomic development. The direct impact includes the cost of healthcare and loss of productivity due to illness. The indirect impact involves the cost of vector control measures and the socio-economic burden on families and communities.
Several challenges impede the control of VBDs, including inadequate surveillance, vector resistance to insecticides, and climate change. Addressing these challenges requires a multi-pronged approach, including strengthening surveillance systems, promoting research in vector control, and enhancing community participation in disease prevention.
Vector-borne diseases remain a prominent public health issue in India, causing significant morbidity and mortality. A comprehensive understanding of these diseases, their impact, and the challenges in controlling them is crucial for healthcare professionals. This knowledge will enable the development and implementation of effective strategies for the prevention and control of VBDs in India.
