People who smoke or drink excessive amounts of alcohol are also at an increased risk of developing osteoporosis. The treatment of osteoporosis depends on the severity of the condition and the individual patient. Treatment options may include lifestyle changes, such as increasing physical activity and making sure to get enough calcium and vitamin D in the diet. Medications, such as bisphosphonates, can also be used to help slow the progression of osteoporosis and reduce the risk of fractures. Other treatment options include hormone replacement therapy, which can help reduce the risk of fractures in postmenopausal women, and calcitonin, which can help reduce the risk of fractures in people with severe osteoporosis. Finally, surgery may be an option for people with severe osteoporosis who are at a high risk of fractures.
