Migraines, characterized by debilitating headaches and neurologic symptoms, affect a significant portion of the global population. Their management remains a challenge for healthcare professionals due to the complex pathophysiology and individual variability in response to treatment. Migraines are believed to be a neurovascular disorder involving a complex interplay between the nervous and vascular systems. Understanding the pathophysiology of migraines is crucial in formulating effective treatment strategies. The trigeminovascular system plays a significant role in migraine pathogenesis, with the release of neuropeptides causing inflammation and pain.
Pharmacological treatment for migraines can be divided into acute and preventive therapies. Acute treatments aim to alleviate symptoms during an attack, and include triptans, ergotamines, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. By staying abreast of the latest research and advancements in migraine management, healthcare professionals can significantly enhance their patients' quality of life.
