They are commonly used to treat hyperphosphatemia and reduce phosphate levels in the blood. The most common phosphate binders are calcium-based, such as calcium carbonate and calcium acetate. These medications work by binding to dietary phosphate and preventing its absorption in the intestine. Calcium-based phosphate binders are generally safe and well-tolerated, but they can cause constipation, nausea, and bloating.
Recently, there has been an effort to revolutionize phosphate binders and develop new approaches to managing hyperphosphatemia. One such approach is the use of non-calcium-based phosphate binders.
