Early diagnosis is crucial in managing osteoporosis. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) remains the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis. FRAX scoring system, which considers risk factors such as age, sex, weight, and family history, can also aid in identifying patients at high risk.
First-line pharmacological options include bisphosphonates, denosumab, and teriparatide. Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption, while teriparatide stimulates new bone formation. Denosumab, a monoclonal antibody, inhibits osteoclasts, thereby reducing bone resorption. Individual patient characteristics should guide the choice of therapy.
Non-pharmacological interventions are equally important. Encourage patients to maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D. Regular weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises can help improve bone health. Additionally, advise patients to limit alcohol intake and quit smoking.
Regular follow-ups and monitoring of bone mineral density (BMD) are essential. Consider reassessing BMD every 1-2 years to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. Monitor for potential side effects of therapy and adjust treatment as needed.
Optimal management of osteoporosis involves a multifaceted approach, including early diagnosis, appropriate pharmacological interventions, lifestyle modifications, and regular monitoring. By implementing these strategies, healthcare professionals can significantly impact the disease trajectory, improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
