The development of new vaccines is an important part of medicine and public health. Vaccines have been used in the prevention of many diseases, including meningitis, for centuries. However, the development of new vaccines to combat the more recent forms of meningitis, such as meningococcal disease, has been a challenge. Bexsero works by stimulating the body’s immune system to produce antibodies against the four types of N. meningitidis bacteria. When the body is exposed to these bacteria, the antibodies will bind to them, preventing them from attaching to the cells of the body and causing infection. This helps the body to fight off the bacteria before it can cause disease.
Bexsero is recommended for people of all ages, but it is especially important for those who are at an increased risk of developing meningococcal disease. These include people who have weakened immune systems, those who have had close contact with someone who has the disease, and those who live or travel in areas where the disease is common.
The use of Bexsero could have a number of potential benefits. First, it could help to reduce the incidence of meningococcal disease, as well as the severity of cases that do occur. Second, it could reduce the need for antibiotics, as the vaccine can help to prevent the disease before it develops.
