The presence of end-organ damage, indicated by clinical findings or diagnostic tests, differentiates hypertensive emergencies from hypertensive urgencies, which lack such evidence.
Immediate reduction of BP is the cornerstone of managing hypertensive emergencies. However, it's essential to avoid overly rapid reduction, which could precipitate end-organ hypoperfusion. Intravenous antihypertensive medications, such as labetalol, nicardipine, or sodium nitroprusside, are preferred.
