Approximately one in five adults experience mental illness each year, yet many remain undiagnosed and untreated. Primary care providers are often the first point of contact for patients, placing them in a unique position to identify mental health concerns early. Integrating mental health screening into primary care can help bridge the gap in service provision and improve patient outcomes.
Comprehensive mental health screening can lead to early detection and treatment of mental health conditions, reducing the burden on patients and the healthcare system. It can also foster a more holistic understanding of patient health, allowing providers to address both physical and mental health needs concurrently. This approach aligns with the biopsychosocial model of health, acknowledging the interconnectedness of physical and mental health.
Despite the potential benefits, integrating mental health screening into primary care presents challenges.
