Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide. Early recognition and prompt intervention can significantly reduce the severity of outcomes. This article provides a comprehensive guide to early stroke recognition and management for healthcare professionals.
Stroke symptoms often occur suddenly. The acronym F.A.S.T. (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911) is a useful tool for identifying stroke symptoms. Additionally, sudden onset of severe headache, confusion, trouble seeing or walking are indicative of a possible stroke.
Upon patient arrival, immediate assessment using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is crucial. Neuroimaging, preferably with a non-contrast CT scan, should be performed promptly to differentiate between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
Acute ischemic stroke management focuses on restoring blood flow. Intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) should be administered within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. In selected cases, endovascular procedures like mechanical thrombectomy may be considered.
After initial treatment, secondary prevention strategies are vital to prevent stroke recurrence. These include antiplatelet therapy, anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation, blood pressure control, statin therapy, lifestyle modifications, and carotid endarterectomy or stenting in selected cases.
Early recognition and appropriate management of stroke can significantly improve patient outcomes. Healthcare professionals play a critical role in this process. Continual education and training on the latest stroke guidelines are essential to deliver optimal patient care.
