Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. As healthcare professionals, it is crucial to identify and mitigate its risk factors to promote cardiovascular health. This article provides a comprehensive guide on this subject.
The assessment of CVD risk factors is the first step in prevention. These factors can be classified as modifiable and non-modifiable. Non-modifiable factors include age, sex, and family history, while modifiable factors encompass lifestyle habits such as smoking, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Tools like the Framingham Risk Score and the SCORE system can aid in quantifying risk.
Addressing modifiable risk factors is key to reducing CVD risk. Lifestyle modifications such as smoking cessation, adopting a heart-healthy diet, regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight are fundamental. Additionally, managing conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia through appropriate medication and lifestyle changes can significantly lower the risk.
