Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) is a vital tool in diagnosing and monitoring respiratory diseases. However, interpreting these results can be complex.
Key components of PFT include spirometry, lung volumes, and diffusion capacity. Spirometry measures airflow and lung capacity, while lung volumes provide information on air trapping and diffusion capacity assesses gas transfer.
Obstructive patterns are indicated by reduced FEV1/FVC ratio, while restrictive patterns show reduced lung volumes. Diffusion impairment may suggest interstitial lung disease or pulmonary vascular disorders.
Serial PFTs provide valuable insight into disease progression and response to treatment. Significant changes in PFT parameters may indicate disease exacerbation or progression.
Interpreting PFT results requires a comprehensive understanding of respiratory physiology and pathology. Through careful analysis of PFT results, healthcare professionals can provide optimal patient care and management.
