Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming increasingly prevalent, affecting approximately 25% of the global population. Despite its widespread impact, it remains a largely under-recognized condition. This article aims to shed light on the causes, impacts, and contemporary treatments of NAFLD.
NAFLD is primarily associated with metabolic syndrome, which includes conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Genetic predisposition, diet, and a sedentary lifestyle also contribute to its development. Importantly, NAFLD can occur in individuals without these risk factors, indicating other yet-to-be-identified causes.
NAFLD can progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, increasing morbidity and mortality. It also exacerbates cardiovascular disease risk, the leading cause of death in NAFLD patients. Moreover, NAFLD imposes a significant economic burden due to hospitalizations, liver transplants, and loss of productivity.
While lifestyle modification remains the cornerstone of NAFLD management, several promising pharmacological interventions are emerging. These include Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonists, Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, and Farnesoid X receptor (FXR) agonists. These drugs target various pathways involved in liver fat metabolism and inflammation. Moreover, the potential of non-invasive diagnostic tools and digital health technologies in NAFLD management is being explored.
Unmasking NAFLD is essential to addressing this silent epidemic. Understanding its causes can aid in early identification and prevention, while recognizing its impacts can drive policy changes and resource allocation. Embracing innovative treatments can enhance patient outcomes and quality of life. As healthcare professionals, our role in this endeavor is pivotal.
