Spirometry, the most common PFT, measures the amount (volume) and speed (flow) of air that can be inhaled and exhaled. Key values include Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1), and their ratio (FEV1/FVC). Abnormalities in these values can indicate obstructive or restrictive lung diseases.

Recognizing Obstructive and Restrictive Patterns

Obstructive disorders, such as COPD and asthma, are characterized by reduced airflow. This is reflected in a decreased FEV1/FVC ratio. On the other hand, restrictive disorders like pulmonary fibrosis present with reduced lung volumes (FVC), but normal or increased FEV1/FVC ratio.
