Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) has emerged as a critical strategy in modern healthcare, particularly within hospital settings. This approach aims to optimize the use of antimicrobials to achieve the best patient outcomes, reduce microbial resistance, and decrease the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.
AMS programs are designed to ensure the appropriate use of antimicrobials through monitoring, evaluation, and feedback. They help to prevent overuse, misuse, and underuse of antimicrobials, thereby reducing the likelihood of resistance and adverse effects. AMS also promotes the use of narrower spectrum agents and shorter durations of therapy, where clinically appropriate.
In hospital settings, AMS can play a pivotal role in improving patient safety and quality of care. By reducing unnecessary antimicrobial use, it aids in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs), including Clostridioides difficile infection. Furthermore, AMS programs can lead to significant cost savings by reducing unnecessary drug use and associated healthcare costs.
As antibiotic resistance continues to pose a significant global health threat, the role of AMS in optimizing patient care cannot be overemphasized. It is crucial for healthcare providers to embrace these programs to enhance patient outcomes, reduce microbial resistance, and improve overall healthcare efficiency.
