Loculated pleural effusion is a condition in which fluid accumulates in the pleural space, the area between the lungs and the chest wall, and becomes trapped in pockets or loculations. Chest X-rays can show the presence of fluid in the pleural space, but they are not very accurate in determining the size and shape of the loculations. CT scans are more accurate in determining the size and shape of the loculations, but they are not always available. Ultrasound can also be used to diagnose loculated pleural effusion, but it is not as accurate as CT scans.
The treatment of loculated pleural effusion depends on the underlying cause. If the cause is chest trauma or surgery, the fluid may need to be drained to relieve pressure on the lungs. This is done using a needle or a catheter. If the cause is an infection, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the infection. If the cause is an underlying medical condition, treatment of the condition may be necessary.
